hi, hello, my name is Lauren,
these are a few things I've found in my attic, and some things about me.

porcelain_angel, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 10:56am: chicken tenderloins
Cleaning the freezer out I found a pack of chicken strips in the back. They look OK, but the sell by date says 11/9/09. Are these still OK to thaw, cook, and eat? Can we(me and the 27 month old) eat this? Thanks in advance!

emily_aquarius, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 6:21pm: My coworker bought a thing of hummus, ate a bit of it and decided she didn't like the taste. She told me I could have it. Being the paranoid person I am, I had to go and check the expiration date. It expired on the 14th. It smells fine and looks fine. Can I eat it?

not that i've really exerted a considerable amount of energy towards finding them. i like my lucky strike blues just fine anyway.

'home' has been playin' on my mind in recent history, not because i'm sick for it but because the word doesn't really exist in french.

the concept, therefore, is not exactly universal, which is a peculiar notion.

this is my hometown ["Madtown, Dairyland"]:

this is where i'm crashing currently [Paris]:

and i like to think i nurse some sort of spiritual connection with this place [Berlin]:

where are you from (originally, currently and spiritually)?

_antiquepearls, posting in blackcigarette @ 12:57pm: laptop stickers
I was recently remembering my friend Sarah, who used to put stickers on practically *everything*. She had one of those huge see-through tabletop Mac's and it was *decked out* in awesome stickers she got at gigs, random New York stores, and what not (cool Azn friends...etc)

So show me your laptops (or cellys). (Hey, a nerd has to get her kicks! And I don't mean Nike's!)

PIC#1: I'm a minimalist, and this Rough Trade sticker, that I got from some cool lesbians in London ('cause I bought Crass's album "Penis Envy") is on my Burberryesque Nokia E63. Sadly, my laptop [a Toshiba sattelite series] is bare (but used to have a ninja turles -specifically Rafael- sticker).

neverthewiser, posting in blackcigarette @ 1:00pm: Winter travels & Mix CD's
This January, I'm travelling to Stockholm, Oslo, Brussels and Bruges with a friend. In hindsight, it might've been a smarter move to book a trip to Scandinavia during warmer months, but you know what happens when opportunity knocks!

If you live in/have visited the aforementioned cities: Do you have any tips as to what types of clothing/accessories I must pack, amazing(ly cheap) places to eat and drink and other can't-miss things to do and see? This will be my, and my friend's, first time to these cities so our game plan is to arrive and just fly by the seat of our pants!

And so this post isn't simply a travel question, I leave you with a gift I mailed to a friend who is spending the year teaching in Korea:

Shake it like you mean it )

Thanks for your help!

megamuphen, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 3:14pm: Pepperidge Farm Stuffing
My mom just realized that the stuffing mix she thought was leftover from Thanksgiving actually... isn't. It has a sell-by date of 9/30/2007. Cubed, Herb Seasoned Stuffing. Can we eat it?
to_biased, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 10:43pm: My mom forgot to put a tub of cream cheese into the fridge. It was still sealed when I opened it, there are no weird tastes or smells but it's been sitting in our (relatively cool) kitchen for 2 days. Do you think it's still safe to eat?

strryeyedgrrl, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 11:23am: So, I was making muffins for Christmas morning breakfast and I realized that I was making them so big that I might not have enough batter to make more than eight muffins or so. I'm going to have just that many people here, so I'd like to have more muffins than that. I rummaged around in my cupboard and found the same exact muffin mix (yeah, I'm not baking from scratch this year) that I'd just used.

Photobucket

Except that it's probably been in the cupboard for at least...four years? More? I bet it moved over here with us from our old place and we moved in here three years ago. And then, I don't know how long it was in the cupboard at our old place. I have a real problem with buying too many of these mixes and then never using them.

Everything is super sealed inside and doesn't look strangely colored. I haven't opened the can of blueberries yet, so I don't know what condition they're in. I've turned the box and the can over and over, but could not find any expiration date.

Is this safe to make or will I be sending my Christmas guests to their lemon blueberry doom?

xx_socold_xx, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 5:41pm: Pie
My boyfriend and I bought an Edwards key lime pie last night--the kind you thaw & serve. We bought it around 7, ate around 8, and then it went in the refrigerator. With my family, we usually put the pie back in the freezer instead of the fridge, so I'm not aware of how long I can leave this pie in the fridge until I probably shouldn't eat it anymore.

It's been almost 24 hours since it's been in the fridge. Still safe to eat tonight? Should I put it in the freezer afterward, or is the fridge okay? I was confused because it was thaw & serve, and well, it being in the fridge means it's been thawed this whole time, right?

I'd rather not risk it because the one time I did eat pie that had been in the fridge, I got sick. :(
nikislynch, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 10:58pm: pate?
made a pate sandwich this morning for work (about 10am)... never got a chance to eat it at work. it hasnt been refrigerated. safe to eat now? (11pm) thanks :)
gleef, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 3:42pm: Can I Use This? 4+ Year Old Afrin
I have to sleep with a CPAP Machine with a nasal mask, which means that my nose needs to be really clear at night.

I have many techniques to do this, but my last line of defense is Afrin (well, in this case, Target's generic Afrin knockoff). It works really well, but it has a horrible "blowback" side effect when overused, so I only break it out when all else fails.

In fact, I've been so good at keeping my usage down that last night, after using it, I looked at the back of my current bottle and noticed it expired in November 2005. Still works tho (still half full too).

Does anyone know what happens to Afrin (0.05% Oxymeazoline HCL) when it gets old? I hate to throw away stuff that's still useful, can anyone think of a reason beyond "the stamp says it's expired" why I shouldn't keep it?

dictionary00, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 6:37pm: Canned soup
Found a can of Campbell's Chunky soup in the back of my pantry, expired 1 year. It's clam chowder, never opened, no bulges/dents/scratches/etc. Smells and looks fine but I think the cream might be dried out a bit? Not sure since I haven't had canned soup for a few months.

I plan to boil the soup before eating, if it makes a difference.

What do you think?
nomad____, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 11:51am: Falafel mix
I found this Near East vegetarian Falafel mix in my pantry today and I want to eat it soo bad but it says best buy March 2009. It is a dry packaged mix, ingreditents: defatted wheat germ, garbanzo beans, fava beans, soy protein concentrate, potato flour, structured soy flour, salt, spices.... Do you think it is safe to eat?

wendykh, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 10:28pm: Cake
I received a professionally made cake which was delivered Saturday. I don't know when it was made and I've looked all over the box. It's from a company.

I want to know if I can freeze it (or just refrigerate it?) and serve it next Sunday. I'm having a huge party and this would be an awesome dessert.

It's chocolate and has some creme filling and real cherries in it.

Hello! My name is Ivana Stab. I’ll be 21 in February. I live in a middle-of-nowhere suburb, but thankfully it is located in Sydney. I’ll be starting my year of Honours early in 2010 to wrap up a Bachelor of Arts (Politics and International Relations). I make perzines and fanzines and sometimes write CD and gig reviews for various websites. Mostly I chain-smoke in Hyde Park and talk incessantly.

Once upon a time, I visited Livejournal religiously. Then it became a bit of a ghost town but I realised recently I really miss it. I’ve met lots of amazing people through this website; some of those people have become good friends of mine “in real life”. I discovered many of my interests and musical loves by stumbling upon them on Livejournal. I’m hoping things will become a bit more lively here so it’d be nice to meet some new people, hence this introductory post.

N.E.E.T. began in December 2005 as a quarterly, online publication, laid out in a magazine format - as a showcase for grassroots creativity. BUST called N.E.E.T. "A box of tasty visual bonbons and a brilliant take on the magalog genre", Venus Zine said "N.E.E.T. is highly addictive.. you'll think you've stumbled upon NYLON's funkier, thrift-store chic little sister." and Katie White from The Ting Tings said in Elle that "Neetmagazine.com features all the best vintage clothes on the internet and makes them look special."

N.E.E.T. has just released its seventeenth issue which you can view online at: www.neetmagazine.com...

yhanthlei, posting in can_i_eat_this @ 11:35am: Yesterday, my chef gave me all the leftover sea urchin mayonnaise I made and served at a party last night. This is about $50 worth, just because of the sea urchin in it. Wow!

I know it's still good today, because it has never been out of cold storage. But how long will it keep, under those circumstances. Note that there are NO preservatives. This mayo is made with eggs and oil and I whisked it by hand and everything.

Yeah, I admit, I wanted to brag a little! But I also want to know how long it'll keep!
